Ruth Jones has won a BAFTA award for her performance as Nessa in the final episode of Gavin and Stacey. She called the win a “lovely way to say goodbye” to the show, which has been part of her life for 17 years.
The final episode, which aired on Christmas Day, was watched by over 19 million people — one of the biggest TV audiences in recent years. In the episode, Nessa finally married Smithy, played by co-creator James Corden.
Jones received the award for Best Female Performance in a Comedy and said she was surprised by the win. “I had already taken off my shoes and was ready for the night,” she joked.
Alongside acting, Jones is also a bestselling author. She will soon release her fourth novel, By Your Side, a story about unexpected connections and the importance of friendship. The book follows Linda Standish, who finds people who have died without any known relatives. Jones said the character is based a little on herself and described the story as uplifting.
By Your Side will be released on Thursday, and Jones plans to celebrate with a small launch party.
