A powerful tornado hit southeastern Kentucky late Friday night, killing 10 people and injuring many others.

Nine people died in Laurel County, and one more death was reported in nearby Pulaski County. Local authorities are still searching for survivors.

The tornado touched down around 11:49 p.m., causing heavy damage along Keavy Road, KY 1006, Old Whitley Road, and near the London Corbin Airport.

Laurel County Sheriff John Root called it a “mass casualty event.” Rescue teams from surrounding areas arrived quickly to help in the search and recovery.
