A fast-moving dust storm swept across parts of northern Illinois Friday evening, reducing visibility and triggering warnings for drivers and people with respiratory conditions.
The storm began around 6:30 p.m., carrying dust northward from farmlands in central Illinois. Strong winds pushed the dust cloud at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour, quickly darkening skies in several areas.
Visibility dropped to less than half a mile in affected regions. Motorists were urged to pull over, turn on hazard lights, and move away from travel lanes. Residents were also advised to treat the storm like heavy fog, staying in safe, visible areas.
The storm moved through southern suburbs such as Homewood shortly before sunset. Officials reported that the dust storm took about 30 minutes to pass through most locations.
A dust storm warning remained in effect until 8:30 p.m. In addition, temporary ground stops were issued for flights at O’Hare and Midway international airports due to low visibility.
Authorities continue to monitor conditions and advise the public to remain alert in case of further weather developments.
