JCPenney Closing Multiple Stores Nationwide This Weekend

Several JCPenney locations across the United States are set to close permanently this weekend. Stores in states such as California and Idaho will be shutting their doors for good, affecting both customers and employees.

The store closures were confirmed by a company spokesperson on May 20. These closures follow a previous statement issued in February, indicating that a limited number of stores would shut down by mid-year.

At the time, the company stated: “While there are no plans for significant reductions in store count, a handful of closures are expected due to factors such as expiring leases and market conditions.”

The February announcement also emphasized that the closures are unrelated to the merger that took place in January 2025, which resulted in the formation of Catalyst Brands—a retail group uniting brands such as Aéropostale, Brooks Brothers, and Lucky Brand.

The company acknowledged the contributions of employees and loyalty of customers, expressing continued commitment to serving working families through approximately 650 other store locations nationwide and online.

The JCPenney stores closing by May 25, 2025, include:

  • The Shops at Tanforan in San Bruno, California
  • The Shops At Northfield in Denver, Colorado
  • Pine Ridge Mall in Pocatello, Idaho
  • West Ridge Mall in Topeka, Kansas
  • Fox Run Mall in Newington, New Hampshire
  • Asheville Mall in Asheville, North Carolina
  • Charleston Town Center in Charleston, West Virginia
